ABOUT MAGE

Mlimba District has a fertile agricultural land which supports the growth of different types of crops, the main crop grown around this district is rice which is both food and cash crop in the area.

Oil palm trees (Elaeis guineensis) and Cocoa have become alternative cash crops in Mlimba District due to the demand for palm oil and other products obtained from the crop and also due to the demand of Cocoa products around the world . Considering the need for edible oil in our country, oil palm trees (Elaeis guineensis) has become important in reducing the edible oil gap.

In this context, we as stakeholders in the oil palm trees (Elaeis guineensis) and Cocoa industry have decided to establish the IGIMA MCHIKICHI GROUP (IMG). An institution that will promote these crops by establishing sustainable plantations and model farms, as well as collaborating with government and non-governmental organizations to ensure the successful cultivation of oil palm trees (Elaeis guineensis) and Cocoa sustainably and bring economic and environmental benefits to the District community and the nation.

Our Activities

Sustainable oil palm trees (Elaeis guineensis) farming has gained attention in recent years due to the negative environmental and social impacts associated with conventional practices.

Sustainable oil palm trees (Elaeis guineensis) farming refers to the cultivation and harvesting of oil palm crops in an environmentally and socially responsible manner, while also ensuring economic viability. This is achieved through the implementation of various practices and principles that minimize negative impacts on natural resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote social development.

Oil palm is an important crop that plays a significant role in various industries, including food, cosmetics, and biofuels. It is renowned for its high oil yield compared to other oil crops, making it a valuable commodity.

Oil palm is a highly productive crop that is primarily grown in tropical regions, accounting for approximately 40% of global vegetable oil production. Sustainable oil palm farming focuses on promoting responsible land use, biodiversity conservation, and social development.

One of the key principles of sustainable farming is responsible land use. This involves avoiding the conversion of high conservation value areas such as primary forests and peatlands for plantations. Instead, farmers are encouraged to use already degraded land for cultivation. By preventing further deforestation, sustainable farming helps safeguard biodiversity and protect the habitat of different species, in implementing this IMG focuses on creating plantations in areas affected by deforestation and advising other farmers to follow suit in doing so.

Furthermore, sustainable farming practices aim to improve soil and water management to minimize environmental pollution. This includes implementing measures to reduce fertilizer and pesticide use, which can have detrimental effects on ecosystems. Instead, farmers are encouraged to adopt integrated pest management strategies that prioritize biological control methods and reduce chemical inputs. By implementing such practices, sustainable oil palm farmers can maintain soil fertility and prevent water pollution, contributing to overall environmental sustainability.
